The Pennsylvania Veterans’ Graves Database is a work in progress that was begun a decade ago and slowly grows with each passing month.  The information contained in the Database is compiled from a number of sources.  The largest source is a collection known as the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Burial Card (PVBC) collection.  It consists of tens of thousands of index cards with information about Veterans who served in military conflicts from the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War up through approximately 2012, who are also buried in Pennsylvania.  The original index cards of the PVBC collection are housed at the State Library and Archives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  While the individual cards have been digitally scanned, much of the information on the cards has not been entered into an easily searchable database.  A few years ago we went through the entire PVBC collection (an estimated 100,000+ cards) and gathered together digital images of all cards for War of 1812 Veterans and we have been manually entering this information, letter by letter, into our database.  At the end of 2023, we are approximately one third of the way through this subset of the PVBCs.  The majority of the cards were compiled in the 1930s as part of a Works Progress Administration project that went county-by-county to as many cemeteries as possible gathering information, recognizing that tombstones were beginning to become unreadable due to weather and pollution.  This information was also checked against muster roll and payroll lists that are maintained in the Pennsylvania State Archives.

In addition to the PVBC collection, we have reached out to all of the major historical societies in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and each of the 67 county offices of the Veterans Administration to discover what records they maintain.  In some instances we have gained a wealth of information on War of 1812 Veterans who do not appear in the PVBC collection from historical societies and VA offices that maintain other records.  In other cases, we have shared our own lists to help fill in gaps in county and VA collections.  There are 67 VA offices in Pennsylvania almost every county has at least one major historical society.  We have also been working our way through the list of historic cemeteries in the Commonwealth, those 150 years old or older as these cemeteries often have good documentation and records.  In addition to all of the email and in person research in libraries and archives, we also make numerous on-site field visits each year as we criss-cross the Commonwealth.  We also receive dozens of individual pieces of information from family researchers and genealogists who have information about their ancestor Veterans who they do not currently see in our database, and we are very grateful for such contributions.

At some point when we have completed entering the information from all of the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Burial Cards, we might attempt a publication, but for the moment the electronic database is the Society’s primary information depository.  We attempt to update the database several times throughout the year.  Thank you for your patience as we continue our ongoing work in an effort to honor the memory of our Veteran ancestors and provide modern researchers with a useful information resource tool.
